Rockridge Community Planning Council

Community-Led Initiatives for the Betterment of Rockridge

Our nonprofit’s board is elected by the local community and serves to improve the neighborhood for those who live, work, and visit here.

RCPC’s focus areas include land use, transportation, and quality-of-life issues. We advocate for changes with the City, and work collaboratively with local merchants via the Rockridge District Association, the Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council, Friends of the Library, and Friends of the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt.

We also publish the monthly The Rockridge News, a vehicle for keeping our community informed, engaged, and connected.

RCPC Statement about the Proposed Trader Joe’s Project (revised)

RCPC firmly supports adding housing in Rockridge to address California’s housing crisis. That said, we were surprised by the scale of the proposal – more than three times the current height limit – and very disappointed with the potential loss of Trader Joe’s. We know how important that location is as a daily hub for our community.

RCPC will be advocating for a project that contributes to our pedestrian-oriented neighborhood and sustains the commercial and social vitality of College Avenue, without overwhelming it. We will push for Trader Joe’s or another affordable grocery option to remain at the heart of our neighborhood, and work to integrate community-focused uses, such as an on-site pharmacy, into the project. Furthermore, we will challenge the developer’s rationale that a 20% density bonus warrants buildings that are three to three and a half times the current 95 foot height limit.

We are committed to using our influence to propose modifications to this project that will benefit our neighborhood, and are actively working to connect with the developers of the project. We are very interested in hearing feedback from community members while we navigate this process.

Upcoming Events Calendar

The highlight of my time on the RCPC was working on the activation of College Avenue. Rockridge was still rebuilding from the disruption of Highway 24 and BART, which divided the community. Finding opportunities for ground-floor retail, restaurants, and services was critical for creating activity in the neighborhood.
