Rockridge Shopping Center Reconstruction Project (Broadway and Pleasant Valley)

Saturday, December 4, 2010

The Planning Commission’s design review committee will hold a public hearing December 8, 5 p.m., at City Hall, Hearing Room 1, to review this project, which will reconstruct and expand North Oakland’s most important shopping center.

RCPC is working with four other local community groups to present an alternative community proposal.

  • In Rockridge; Friends and Neighbors of College Avenue (FANS)
  • In Temescal; Standing Together for Accountable Neighborhood Development (STAND) and Urbanists for a Livable Temescal Rockridge Area (ULTRA)
  • In the Piedmont Avenue Area, the Piedmont Avenue Neighborhood Improvement League (PANIL).

Working together, the groups are designing a proposal to meet Safeway’s project phasing requirements while providing a shopping area that is better integrated into North Oakland’s urban fabric. When complete, the design will be posted on RCPC’s website:

Community support at the public hearing will be important in getting the Planning Commission to take the community alternative plan seriously. An environmental impact report (EIR) currently in preparation may be released this spring.

The Oakland planner assigned to the project is Darin Ranelletti, 238-3663,
