Donate for a Reason: Help Tech and Five Other Oakland Schools Raise Critical Funds

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Ride for a Reason, now in its sixth year, is a two-wheeled protest to advocate for more state funding for public schools, and a fundraiser for programs that support student creativity and a nurturing environment in six Oakland schools.

Our goals this year are 250 riders in Sacramento and $120,000 raised for six Oakland schools: Claremont Middle School; Edna Brewer; Emerson Elementary; Oakland International High; Oakland Technical High; and Westlake Middle School.

To make a donation, please go to:

Ride for a Reason is the single biggest fundraiser for Emerson, International, and Westlake, and the second biggest fundraiser for Brewer, Claremont, and Tech. At least two-thirds of the students at each of these schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. The funds we raise are critical for helping to maintain high-quality programs that support and encourage students all over our city.

We are making excellent progress in recruiting riders: we expect to have more than 200 on May 17. But we need to pick up the pace in donations. So far we have raised about $45,000 (our warmest thanks to all of you who have donated). To reach our goal of $120,000, we need your support. Please consider making a generous donation today:

Every dollar donated goes to student programs, and your contribution is 100 percent tax-deductible.
