Claremont School News: Enrollment Soars, Support the Auction

The secret is out: Exciting things are happening at Claremont Middle School under the leadership of twin principals Reginald and Ronald Richardson. The resulting big bump in enrollment - from a projected 335 to 487 - is causing growing pains for the school, which needed four substitute teachers to cover academic core classes on the first day. Now, three new permanent teachers have been hired to teach math, science, and social studies to 6th and 7th graders, and the principals are working hard to find an English teacher to fill the remaining open position.

For one hundred years, the dark gray, cast-iron gate now at the corner of College Avenue and Birch Court has had historical significance, proclaiming the neighborhood school to be "Claremont Junior High, 1913." The weathered-looking gate has remained a sentinel, watching over years and students gone by, showing veritable proof of the school's age.

4th Pancake Breakfast Sets Record; Claremont Middle School to Benefit

On April 6, the Rockridge Masonic Lodge hosted the Fourth Annual Pancake Breakfast to support Claremont Middle School. Working closely with the Masons were the Claremont Middle School Dads Club and the Rockridge District Association (RDA).

The record $5,200 raised by the event will be dedicated to help support school programs focusing on fine arts, music, and the school's state-of-the-art computer lab. The breakfast continues to serve as an important community builder as people from the school, residential and business communities come together for a delicious meal.

As Claremont Middle School celebrates its 100th birthday this year, efforts are under way to restore the historic gate that may be the last remaining piece of the original school. Claremont, along with other beautiful Oakland public schools from the early 20th century, was deemed seismically unsafe in the 1970s, when it was torn down and rebuilt.

Come learn about Claremont Middle School (CMS). Tours will be held Saturday, November 3 from 1-4 p.m., and on three Fridays: November 9 and 30, and December 7, all three 9-10:30 a.m.

Meet school and parent leaders, ask questions, learn about the curriculum, and tour the school, including 6th grade and elective classrooms.

This month's regular Town Hall meeting focuses on Rockridge's public schools.  Oakland School Board President (and our representative), Jody London, will talk about the school district's startegis planning process.  She will also introduce the principals of Rockridge's public schools:

Chabot, Peralta, and Emerson Elementary Schools

Claremont Middle School, and

Oakland Technical High School

Each principal will talk about their school and how they are working to make it better.
