For coffee lovers, Rockridge has become brew central. Along a one-block stretch of College Avenue between Claremont and Alcatraz we have four gourmet coffee bars: Peet's Coffee & Tea; Philz Coffee; Cole Coffee; Starbucks in the new Safeway. For a long-time coffee drinker like me, this is simply caffeine heaven. In addition, there are Highwire Coffee in Market Hall and Bica near BART. I decided it was time to sample each of these establishments. Just like with fine wine, fine coffee requires tasting comparisons.

Finally we have a hardware store on College! For more than 30 years, when friends would comment how lucky we were to live near so many great restaurants and shops, my response was always the same: "But we don't have a neighborhood hardware store."

I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in a time and place where there were no large supermarkets. Flash back to the 1950s to a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood populated mainly by Italian and Jewish immigrant families. We had two commercial streets filled with small family-owned shops. There were two of everything: bakery, fish store, butcher (kosher and non-kosher), live poultry market, green grocer, appetizer store (smoked fish and Jewish delicacies) and pizza by the slice.

We were going out to lunch with friends in Bordeaux, France. As we parked the car, I asked my friend how much we need to pay the parking meter. She laughed and told me that in France parking meters are free from noon to 2 p.m. While walking to the restaurant she also mentioned that workers in businesses with 50 or more employees get a lunch voucher that can be used at any restaurant.

Restaurant critics often refer to the current post-Chez Panisse food revolution as the snout-to-tail craze, the farm-to-table movement, the return of retro cocktails and the new comfort food.

Starting in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, the hipster restaurant movement has come to Oakland in full force. Oakland is often referred to as the new Brooklyn. As a Brooklyn transplant, I find this all most amusing.

In my wanderings through Ver Brugge on College Avenue, and The Pasta Shop and Marin Sun Farms Butcher Shop at Market Hall, I’m amazed at the variety of sausages offered to home cooks. Gone are the days limited to the humble hot dog or Louisiana hot links. It appears the gourmet sausage is here for all to enjoy.
