Rockridge Halloween Parade Cancelled due to Power Outage
It’s highly likely that power will be shut off to College Avenue around 5 PM today, continuing through tomorrow.

As a result, the Rockridge District Association and the Rockridge Community Planning Council are very sad to announce that Rockridge Halloween Parade, originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 27 noon-2 pm, is cancelled this year.

Without power, traffic signals won’t operate, making street crossings unsafe for parade-goers.

Deadline Approaching to Propose Community Enhancements Funded by College Avenue Safeway Project.

As reported in last month’s Rockridge News, the settlement reached by community groups [including RCPC] with Safeway resulted in $400,000 to be made available for “community enhancements” within five years of the store’s opening.  The five year deadline is approaching in January, so the choice is, “use it, or lose it.”

Update on Rockridge Housing Study (June 2019)

The Rockridge Housing Study, begun last spring, seeks to provide information that the community can use to guide decisions about how Rockridge might best help address the City’s housing needs.  Five alternative scenarios have been developed.  As noted in last month’s report, Darin Smith, a Rockridge resident and a principal of Economic & Planning Systems, Inc., has volunteered some of his time and the use of modeling software his firm developed to help the Committee analyze each scenario’s effects on housing – both amount and affordability – and t

U.C. Students Design Affordable Housing at the Rockridge BART station

This year, a U.C. Berkeley graduate course included student projects studying possible housing projects at two BART station sites:  Glen Park Station in San Francisco and the Rockridge BART Station.  The projects were all based on recent state legislation that allowed BART to “upzone” land it owned to promote transit-oriented housing, with an emphasis on affordable housing.

Update on status of SB 50 (Wiener/Skinner)

In a somewhat surprising move, the Senate Finance Committee placed SB 50, authored by Senators Wiener and Skinner, in the "suspense" file.  That action is reserved for bills that could have significant fiscal impacts and need  further study or modification.  In the case of SB 50, the committee report for the bill had flagged significant costs for analyzing and then preparing maps of the "job rich" areas across the state that would be subject to automatic u

April 2019 Land Use Committee Update

Following up on the previous week’s Town Hall featuring Senator Skinner’s Communications Director, Bob Gammon, explaining the bill, the committee discussed various aspects of the bill and how it might affect Oakland and Rockridge.  Committee members raised numerous concerns about the bill.  Perhaps the biggest concern is that the bill, like its predecessor SB 827, attempts a “one-size-fits-all” approach to addressing California’s shortage of affordable housing.  Indeed, Mr.

April 2019 Town Hall Meeting - More on SB 50

The April 18th Town Hall was primarily devoted to a high-interest program: explaining California Senate Bill 50 – a bill to promote housing near train and ferry stops, along major bus routes, and in major job centers – and how it might affect Rockridge.  The program, expertly moderated by Ms.

At RCPC's January 2019 Town Hall Meeting, an overflow crowd of over 100 listened intently as Marc Babsin of Emerald Fund showed, described, and explained current plans for redevelopment of the Oakland campus of California College of Arts (CCA).  The campus, located on the east side of Broadway just north of the half-constructed "Shops at the Ridge" project (currently being rethought by Southern California developer TRC, Inc.) presently serves incoming CCA students before they "graduate" to CCA's expanding San Francisco campus.  Two years ago, CCA announc
